There are several fashion designers we recognize as household names. You have your Chanel, your Dior and even your McQueen. Every now and then you’ll have a Michael Kors or new kid on the block like Christian Siriano. But what about Pierre Cardin? We remember Pierre! Pierre got a little carried away with licensing and plastered his name on so many different things…even he lost count.
Which brings us to Thierry Mugler. Before you write off who this fabulous, over-the-top, couture fashion designer is, do not go looking for your empty Angel or Alien perfume bottle (the wonderful smelling fragrances can be found at department stores all over the world). As mentioned, Mugler owned the 80s/90s catwalks with theatrics, superhero powers channeling cosplay culture and astonishing works of couture.
By 2008, Mugler made another spark in the fashion world with notable outfits worn by Beyonce and Lady Gaga. At the time, people were looking at the designer to be crowned “the one who originated on-stage performance pieces.”
Fast-forward to 2014, we can see a new dawn for The New Mugler. A much simpler, ready-to-wear look with neutral colors. Not that I hate a great, structured blazer, I actually love it, I just wish that this brand stayed true to what made it unique.
Long live The Old Mugler—and I don’t just mean perfume.
